3 ways to turn off automatic Windows 10 updates once and for all

Quite often, the next update of the Windows 10 operating system confuses the user – sometimes you need to quickly turn off the computer and go on business, or, on the contrary, turn on the system and perform some action. Instead, you have to look at the update installation screen, which can sometimes take five to ten minutes. And, unfortunately, with each fresh version of the OS, Microsoft developers close the ability to disable these updates – it is literally difficult to use an outdated version of the system. But, of course, there are several options for solving this problem at once.

Disabling updates by configuring user rights

The first method allows you to completely prevent the operating system from starting the update by reconfiguring user rights.

To do this, you need to follow a few simple steps:

  • Click Win + R on the keyboard, in the window that opens, enter the command services.msc and press Enter;
  • In the list that opens, find the service Windows Update and double click on it;
  • In the “General” tab open the drop-down menu “Startup type” and select the item “Disabled”;

  • Press “Stop”;
  • In the same window, go to the “Log On” tab;
  • Select item “This account” and click on the “Browse” button;
  • In the window that opens, select the “Advanced” item, then open the search, and in the list that opens, click on “The guest”;
  • Click “OK“;
  • Remove the password for the “Guest” user, then apply the changes;
  • Restart your computer.

After the changes are made, the “Windows Update” service will be completely disabled, and its rights are configured as “Guest”, that is, without administrator rights – this service does not have the ability to make changes to the system. And since updates can only be installed as an administrator, Windows 10 will no longer update without the user’s permission.

Disable updates through the Group Policy Editor

The Windows 10 operating system boasts a fairly advanced set of various utilities that can customize even the most important OS functions. Among them is the Group Policy Editor, thanks to which you can also turn off updates in Windows 10.

To do this, you need to follow a few simple steps:

  • Click Win + R on keyboard;
  • Iin the window that opens, enter the command gpedit.msc;
  • Go to: Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components;
  • Select a category Windows Update;
  • Find the item “Configuring Automatic Updates”;
  • Put the parameter into the mode “Disabled”;
  • Click “OK“.

Disable updates through the task scheduler

Thanks to the Task Scheduler utility, certain processes in the operating system are launched automatically – these include system updates.

Fortunately, the functions of this utility can also be limited:

  • Click Win + R on keyboard;
  • In the window that opens, enter the command taskschd.msc.
  • Go to: Task Scheduler Library -> Microsoft -> Windows > UpdateOrchestrator;
  • Disable everything related to Windows update.

⚠️ Important: Microsoft developers periodically rename services, so it’s worth looking for anything related to the word Update.

All at once

In most situations, one of the above methods is enough to disable updates, but for the greatest reliability, you should use all of them at once. In this case, it will be much more difficult for Windows 10 to bypass the restrictions and start the update automatically, without the user’s knowledge.
