The fashion for the originality of routers is clearly traced in recent years. Now it is no longer faded parallelepiped with a couple of antennas and a dozen connectors. The new RT-AX82U aims to stand out and attract attention. Both the shape and the illumination distinguish it from the general mass. And the filling of ASUS products is always at its height. The novelty promises to be not only attractive externally but also functional.

The router is accompanied by a set of paper instructions, an Ethernet cable, and a power supply. Just necessary, nothing superfluous.
Even before the power connection, the AX82U attracts the eye: flattened shapes, aggressive look.
Well, after turning on the illumination, neither give nor take – a spaceship from another planet. ASUS has been known for its original network design before, but it hasn’t happened before. A very successful decision, especially because the 82nd is positioned as a “game router.”
All connectors have been put together on the back: five Ethernet (RJ45), one USB third version, a power socket.
There, between the antennas, mounted a key switch, as well as buttons WPS and Reset. Accidentally do not click, and if necessary, it is easy to reach with one finger. The RJ45, a WAN, is rendered separately from the foursome, not to be confused when connected.
Another button is made right in the center of the front panel, it turns off the lights.
The “functional” lighting consisting of four LED lights was modestly attached to the front panel’s left side: the signal power supply, two Wi-Fi ranges (2.4 and 5 GHz), and Internet connectivity. Indicators are two-color, unobtrusive, but well distinguishable by the eye in low daylight.
The lower part of the body is riddled with vent slits. The same slots are visible just above the antenna attachment points on the sidewall.

What inside ASUS RT-AX82U?
Under the “hood” of the alien ship is almost completely hidden aluminum radiators printed board.

The work of RGB-lighting, by the way, is provided by the controller itself.
The 5GHz frequency range is operated by the Broadcom BCM43684 controller. The maximum data speed is 4804 Mbps.
It is noteworthy that the USB connector has been diluted only by one. According to the specifications, the AX82U supports Dual WAN and 3G/4G LTE. And the connection of external drives is also stated. You’ll have to choose how to use a single USB: a backup channel or a drive. Of course, you can connect the hub, but what prevented you from withdrawing the second USB? Because the dongle’s full operation is enough bandwidth connectors of the standard 2.0.
Otherwise, there are no claims to the filling. ASUS tried its best and did not save on controllers, nor the quality of the circuit board, nor its cooling. And all this is very important for the work of microwave schemes, which include all routers Wi-Fi.
The introductory menu is simple, designed for a novice user. Here are the most basic data: the name of the Wi-Fi network, the password on it. Automatically search for the latest firmware and its pouring in memory, followed by an update.
At the end of the basic setting, a page with general information about the device is highlighted. Its design has not changed for 8 years. Fingers already from memory find the right sections. And that’s a good thing.
Sections follow the main screen on “domestic” convenience: setting up a guest network (which can only be accessed on the Internet), an intelligent blocker of malicious content AiProtection, and an optimizer. In the traffic analyzer, you can look at the current network load. The information is displayed as a graph.
The following two sections are dedicated to game-branded “utilities” that allow you to speed up the game’s connection with the server, prioritize game traffic, and pave the way for the data along the shortest route.
Then there are two sections on data storage, access to data from the outside and USB devices connected to the router. A useful thing for those who need to periodically access information stored on a local (home) computer or an external (network) disk.
The second block of sections is mostly aimed at experienced users. First, there are several bookmarks with Wi-Fi settings. Not only is the channel width, encryption, SSID display set up, but there are many other small options. It also configures the connection to THE RADIUS server (to whom security comes first), WPS, WDS. AX82U supports AiMESH technology, which combines multiple routers to “maintain” a single Wi-Fi zone.
Then the local (wired) network. Settings are not so much. They are the most familiar – DHCP server, pool of available for rent to customers network addresses, gateway, DNS servers. When you start setting up, all the parameters you need are automatically introduced, and nothing needs to be edited.
The “Internet” section has collected all the options for connecting to the global network. From here, double WAN is configured, ports are “snnable”, Dynamic DNS is configured, and more.

VPN is becoming more popular, and support for this technology is in almost every serious router. AX82U can act as both a client and a server. Supported by PPTP, OpenVPN, IPsec VPN.

To manage the router’s settings (update firmware, administration users, disable access to the “admin” from individual networks, and so on), it is worth going to this section. Its visit is necessary immediately after passing the initial configuration.

The AX82U works steadily. Only occasionally resets of individual settings give some “rawness” of firmware (had to re-activate the necessary services).
Testing of wi-fi bandwidth was carried out in a typical apartment with capital brick walls and inter-room partitions made of wood and orgalit—router and customer (laptop with Wi-Fi adapter based on AX200 controller). iPerl’s data rate was measured in one, two, four, and eight streams. The server took turns climbing on a PC connected by a gigabit Ethernet to a router and a laptop. 3 and 5 meters from the router – direct visibility, 7 – already behind the non-capital partition, 10 – behind the capital wall. The measurements were carried out five times. The average was taken, the results were abnormally low.
As you can see, the power of the router-built transmitter and four antennas is more than enough for a confident connection. Even in the absence of line of sight, the transmission rate did not fall below 280 Mbps when eight threads were involved. Filling the data in the “reverse side” is somewhat worse, especially through capital partitions. This is the relatively small power of the Wi-Fi module in the laptop and antennas with low characteristics.
Conclusion: Should you buy ASUS RT-AX82U?
ASUS RT-AX82U is a good solution for an average apartment or a small country house, for a family of three or seven people. A nice-looking and functional wi-fi router with 802.11ax. The processor’s capacity is enough not only for basic, but also additional tasks. Actively playing users can take advantage of proprietary technologies to reduce pinging and prioritize traffic. The only drawback is the price: it can scare off some buyers. A router with 80.11ax support can be taken one and a half times cheaper. It will not have such customization and flexibility of use, but many choose only the wallet, forgetting about useful additions that simplify workflows.
