Razer has a wide range of gaming headphones in its arsenal, almost all of which come with specialized software to fine-tune any situation. And it all looks flashy “gamer”: backlighting, bright colors, sharp shapes. I won’t say that this is bad, but obviously … not for everyone. For example, I want myself comfortable but simple headphones, which at the same time look relatively calm. To my surprise, there are some. The Razer Barracuda X is a simple yet elegant solution that doesn’t focus on the PC but fits any platform. What’s the catch? Does he exist at all? I answer these questions below.
Cables for all occasions.
As I mentioned at the beginning, the Razer Barracuda X is not tied to a specific platform. Therefore several different cables are included in the kit to connect to anything.
Let’s start simple – a small USB Type-C whistle is used for Bluetooth connection and is the preferred method of connecting the Barracuda X device. This can be plugged into a PC, laptop, Switch, and even iPad. No problems arise.
If your gaming station lacks a modern port, you can use the included USB Type-C to a more familiar USB Type-A adapter. If this connection method is not an option, Razer put a regular cable in the box with two 3.5 mm plugs at the ends. Through it, the Razer Barracuda X can be connected to even an ancient PSP. I checked it works.
The kit also includes a removable microphone with a flexible base and a USB Type-C cable for charging.
Calm gaming headphones. How is it in general?
Wait! Headphones with a clear gaming focus do not look like a battle helmet from games about future wars. But what is really there, in such and on the street you can feel comfortable. The materials aren’t very premium, but the earbuds don’t feel cheap. As a basis, black matte plastic is used here, which actively collects fingerprints, and the ear pads are made of soft fabric that pleasantly envelops the ears and is well ventilated even on hot summer ice rinks.
Interestingly, the Razer Barracuda X has a green color, but only as a small Easter egg – under the microphone mute button and inside the USB charging cable. In my opinion, such a gloomy design decision will be a real gift for lovers of calm assemblies in dark colors.
I was also pleased that the Razer Barracuda X fits quite compactly on the head – both male and female. At the same time, the low weight of 250 grams allows you to spend several hours in a row in them.
You don’t expect audio revelations from $ 100 gaming headphones – you don’t get them. I don’t think the Razer Barracuda X plays well, but it’s still not a music device. Footsteps, beats, shots – it all sounds great, but the music in them is too buzzing and is reduced to bass. However, they are not for that either. What gets in the way is poor sound isolation. Basically, roommates will still be aware of what is happening in the game whether you wear headphones or not. Even at low volumes, everyone around you hears what you hear.
In my opinion, they cope with their task, namely the transmission of sound effects in games. Moreover, the headphones support 3D sound in the PlayStation 5 and proprietary eight-channel 7.1 Surround Sound. In general, if you are not an audiophile and do not have high levels, it will suit you, but if you have already used something with a more premium sound, you should look at the more expensive models. And they are also not for music – I repeat for those who missed it.
The Razer Barracuda X external microphone captures the voice with dignity, cutting off some external noise. Without a doubt, the recording quality here is better than that of analogs with built-in microphones. If desired, you can turn it off using a button on the case.
Easy to connect – even easier to operate.
As for me, the Razer Barracuda X’s feature is its versatility. As an example, Nintendo Switch. We can talk for a long time about which Nintendo is bad and how stupid it was for them to limit Bluetooth in their consoles programmatically, but the fact remains: not all headphones can be connected to a switch. So Barracuda X, fortunately, solves this problem.
Just plug in the USB Type-C connector and play. The console immediately recognizes the headphones and displays a notification on the screen. The sound can be adjusted both with the switch buttons and the convenient wheel on the back of the left earcup. It, of course, does not click when scrolling, so it is definitely not possible to tweak the sound, but it is easy to grope and, on the whole, is controlled comfortably.
Needless to say, there are no problems with any other devices for the Razer Barracuda X either. The manufacturer claims support for PCs, consoles, and smartphones on Android, but I could also connect them to a tablet on iOS and MacBook – the main thing is to have a Type-C or 3.5 mm connector. In theory, you can connect to the iPhone, but it will already be a string of adapters. Do you need it?
Game marathon stretched.
At first, the wireless connection and the claimed 20 hours of operation caused me questions, but after using the headphones for about a week, I realized that it was tough to plant them. In other words, the Razer Barracuda X is unlikely to run out of power in the middle of a long rollercoaster. And even if this happens, nothing prevents you from connecting via a 3.5 mm cable and continuing to play.
They are definitely worth their money.
The Razer Barracuda X is an unusual gaming headset that stands out from the competition in its … modesty. They don’t light up, shoot lasers, or support smart software with a bunch of sliders, but maybe that’s what customers want. Of course, I can’t speak for all gamers, but personally, I liked this approach. Headphones are a simpler and more serious device that requires little or no intervention. Connect – play.
On the negative side, I can note poor noise isolation outside (everyone hears what is playing) and a rather easily soiled case. Also, the Razer Barracuda X is not suitable for those who like to listen to music through gaming headphones – after all, the sound here does not reach the desired level. However, if we consider them precisely an inexpensive gaming solution for those who do not like bright colors and flashy designs, there are not so many competitors.
