For lovers of comfortable watching a movie at home, not in the cinema, there are two ways: a large TV or a projector. And if everything is clear with the first one – you come to the store and take the one that is brighter and larger than the others – then with projectors, everything is a little more complicated. Will it be seen in the afternoon? And if the wallpaper? Where does the sound come from? Today I will try to answer all these questions and add a little more from myself, sharing my impressions of the new ASUS H1.
Strict and a little boring!
The appearance of the ASUS H1 is definitely not impressive. Of course, I cannot call him completely ugly, but there is no zest here either. The projector looks simple – the feeling that ASUS decided to save on this. The plastic is ordinary – somewhere glossy, somewhere matte.
Because of the ventilation grilles on the sides, ASUS H1 looks a bit like a computer case, which was laid on its side. On the other hand, given that the projector is always behind the viewer’s back, its design shouldn’t be a big problem. Well, worth it and worth it. The main thing is not to place the projector on your side – the cooler blows out hot air with a sufficiently strong force that can cause discomfort.
The bottom of the projector has imposing rubberized feet that allow it to be stable on any surface. By the way, the height of the legs is adjustable – twist them a little.
Connectors for every taste!
The question of the compatibility of the projector with various devices among the owners of ASUS H1 is definitely not worth it. The fact is that the manufacturer has provided the new product with, perhaps, all possible connectors. Here they are from left to right:
- 1 × RJ45 Ethernet compatible with Crestron RoomView Express technology, allowing up to 250 projectors to be centrally controlled;
- 2 × 3.5mm Mini Jack;
- 2 × HDMI 2.0;
- 1 × VGA;
- 1 × USB Type-A for charging devices (5V / 1.5A);
- 1 × RS-232.
Two levers and remote control!
The projector is controlled by fairly clear buttons, which should not confuse the new user. After unpacking, the procedure follows: first, turn on ASUS H1 using the round button with a ribbed surface, and then adjust the size of the picture and focus using the smooth levers. You are beautiful! If the projector’s position does not allow you to get a flat picture, additional buttons come into play, with which you can equalize keystone distortion and adjust the sound volume.
The projector also comes with a remote control that duplicates the functions of the buttons. I am glad that ASUS put the batteries in the box for it – this is rare. Among the disadvantages of the projector control system, it is worth noting the volume control. If the exact change of parameters with a step of one division is beneficial in the case of a picture, then it is inconvenient to reduce the sound by clicking on the remote control button 30-40 times. However, given the quality of the projector’s 10-watt audio system, you won’t be using this feature often. ASUS H1 produces a quiet and flat sound that is inferior even to laptop speakers and barely surpasses the projector’s hum.
Excellent brightness, but not enough Full HD!
Moving on to the main characteristics of any projector – how does it show? Here at ASUS H1, everything is more than excellent. Let’s start with dry numbers: the maximum size of the projected image reaches 200 inches, the minimum is 40 inches. The resolution is limited to 1920 × 1080 pixels, and the LEDs have a peak brightness of 3000 lumens. ASUS H1 also supports a 120Hz refresh rate, which can be a decisive factor when choosing a console for nextgen gaming. However, keep in mind – there is no HDR support here.
In fact, all of the above translates into a vivid picture that you can watch without discomfort during the day and in the evening. True, it is better to have plain walls without patterns. In my case, the walls were covered with stripes, which was noticeable in the daytime. If you slide the curtains in and turn off the lights, you can enjoy viewing even with uneven surfaces. I will not lie; 200 inches allows you to take a fresh look at old films and TV series.
In terms of color, ASUS offers the user a wide range of customization options. You can select either a ready-made profile or move the sliders in the “Image” item yourself. However, I only liked the standard model. In sRGB, for example, everything became too pink, and in theatrical – green.
After a week of use!
For a week of daily watching movies on ASUS H1, he became almost my friend. Seriously, a projector is fundamentally changing the way you watch movies. From a “routine” process, it turns into a ceremony. Take food, take it all to the room, turn on the projector and sit on the sofa. The movie begins. As for this particular model, it was able to satisfy all my needs – high brightness (you can watch it even during the day), a clear picture, and an impressive maximum diagonal. What else could you dream about? Well, for example, about normal dynamics – the local ones are no good. Otherwise, the projector has no significant problems.
- Peak brightness 3000 lumens.
- Supports 120 Hz.
- Convenient management.
- Sharp picture.
- Slight heating.
- Mediocre sound from speakers.
