How to free up space in Windows 10 with Storage Sense

Storage sense is a new feature in Windows 10 that, when enabled, automatically cleans unnecessary junk files from your hard drives and frees up space in a set time interval. It does almost the same job as Disk Cleanup, but it runs automatically with no action required at its end.

If you are the type of person who likes to automate things that you repeat from time to time, the storage sense is a practical way to automatically free up space on your hard drives . Delete files you don’t need, such as temporary files, files deleted in the recycle bin, and unchanged files in the Downloads folder, every 30 days. You won’t have to remind yourself to clean your recycle bin ever again.

How to enable Storage Sense in Windows 10

The storage discovery option is in the configuration of storage on Windows 10. By default, it was disabled because Microsoft doesn’t want you to think that Windows has the ability to delete your files without your consent. You will need to activate it manually to enable the feature. Here’s how to do it.

  1. Go to the start menu.
  2. Scribe Storage and select it.
  3. In Storage Sense, click the switch button to activate the function Storage Sense .

Alternatively, you can click on the link » Change how we free up space »Just below the switch to configure how Storage Sense works.

From here, you can configure which files you want Storage Sense to delete and how often they should be deleted. Just check the checkbox to see the actions you want it to take. There are three options that you can enable.

  • Delete temporary files that my applications are not using.
  • Delete files that have been in the recycle bin for more than 30 days.
  • Delete files in the Downloads folder that have not changed in 30 days.

All of these options are pretty clear for what they do. However, for the third option, you may want to think again, as it would delete the files that you have downloaded from your browser. They may be important to you, although it will only remove those that have not had any changes in the last 30 days. You can go to this folder by going to This PC> Downloads .

When Storage Sense is enabled, it will run automatically when it detects that your drive is low on disk space. At other times, it will occasionally perform the cleaning that you have chosen from the 3 options mentioned above.

There is also a button » Clean now »For immediate cleaning by clicking on it.

One thing we have noticed about Storage sense is that it also helps to delete the folder windows.old that was left on your hard drive if you previously upgraded from a previous version of Windows to Windows 10.

The windows.old folder is normally a giant-sized folder that was left to you in case you want to recover something from your old Windows. If you don’t have anything you would like to retain in windows.old, the storage sense is safe to activate. Otherwise, it will automatically delete next time it runs.
