How to move the Windows 11 taskbar to the top

Posted on July 8, 2021

The taskbar, along with the Start menu, underwent significant changes in Windows 11. The familiar elements were radically redesigned. Therefore, almost 10 years later, the live tiles were completely abandoned. The calendar and quick settings were completely transformed. The icons in the taskbar changed, and everything moved to the center. In addition, the position of the taskbar on the screen can no longer be changed – this confused a huge number of Windows 10 users. But, as it turned out, the changes do not mean that this is now impossible.

You can install the Windows 11 taskbar to the top of the screen using the registry editor (at least in the current test build 22000.51). Everything is done quite easily.

How to move the Windows 11 taskbar to the top of the screen

  1. Use the Windows Key + R keyboard shortcut to open the Run utility and type “regedit.exe” in the run box, then click “OK”. Or search for “Registry Editor”.
  2. Go to the following path:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Explorer StuckRects3.
  3. Find the REG_BINARY parameter named “Settings”.
  4. Double click on it – the window for changing the binary parameter will open.
  5. In the FE column for parameter 00000008 (the second in the list) set the value 01 – place the cursor on it, delete the current value and write down the necessary numbers. By default, it should be set to 03.
  6. Click OK and restart File Explorer via Task Manager.

To undo the change, you need to open the same parameter in the registry editor and return the default value 01. Note that the other values (02 or 04) do not work, so moving the taskbar to the left or right side will not work.

⚠️ Important: Be aware that when you move the taskbar to the top of the screen, the Start menu will automatically open only on the left side.
