Install Active Directory Users and Computers in Windows 10

If you are using Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise Edition, here’s how to install Active Directory Users and Computers in Windows 10. You can also use this method to reinstall users and computers from Active Directory in Windows 10 if it is missing after the update.

Active Directory users and computers are part of Microsoft’s remote server administrator tools, often referred to as RSAT. RSAT allows you to remotely manage Windows computers and servers on the network or domain from a Windows 10 device.

When installing RSAT, you would also get the Active Directory Users and Computers (ADUC) role. It allows the Windows administrator to create and manage users, computers, and organizational groups, for example, add new users to a new group, reset a user’s password, manage object permissions across a domain, etc.

How to install Active Directory users and computers in Windows 10

Please note that the Remote Server Administration Tools are only available for Windows 10 Professional and Windows 10 Enterprise . If you try to install it, for example, on Windows 10 Home Edition, you will get an error saying » This update does not qualify for your computer «.

It is also worth mentioning that RSAT, in most cases, is not installed by default. This is how you manually install it and the Active Directory Users and Computers tool.

  1. First of all, go to this page and download the Remote Server Administrator Tools for Windows 10.
  2. Once downloaded, run setup to install RSAT.
  3. After the installation is complete, to enable the tools, go to the start menu or Cortana to open the control panel , and then select Programs .
  4. Then select Programs and characteristics .
  5. From the left panel, click Turn Windows features on or off .
  6. Scroll down to find the Remote Server Administrator Tools .
  7. Expand and then expand Role management tools > Tools of AD DS and AD LDS > Tools of AD DS .
  8. Check the checkbox of the Administrative center from Active Directory .
  9. To run Active Directory Users and Computers, go to the start menu and search Management tools .
  10. Open it up and you should be able to see all the Active Directory tools.

If you do not see the Remote Server Administrator Tools from the Windows Features window, skip to step 9 to see if the tools are already there. In some configurations, the Active Directory tools will be enabled as soon as you have installed RSAT. Go to Management tools and you should be able to see the tools there.
