iPhone 14, Apple Watch Series 8, SE, and Ultra have accident detection. The gyroscope and accelerometer monitor sharp accelerations. If the algorithm considers that the owner has got into an accident and does not respond within 10 seconds, then it contacts the rescue service.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the function does not always work correctly: emergency services repeatedly went to amusement parks on a false call. On a roller coaster, the iPhone shakes violently, and the algorithm thinks it’s an accident.
Apple said it would continue to work on accuracy to minimize false positives. The more users will reject “false accidents,” the better the mechanism will work. How to do this in 10 seconds during a high-speed ride at an attraction is not clear.
There is a solution – airplane mode. Just activate it before going to the attraction, and there will be no false positives.
