Sony to release its first drone to include a full-frame camera

Sony has officially confirmed the release of its professional drone designed to create video content. The Airpeak S1 was originally announced at CES 2021 a few months ago and lacked not only an integrated sensor for capturing images but even a stabilized gimbal. It is the first-ever drone in the history of a Japanese manufacturer and the world’s smallest quadrocopter to shoot with an integrated full-frame mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses.

The Airpeak S1 uses proprietary engine, propeller, and sensing and control technologies. The drone can fly at high speeds of up to 90 km / h and can resist strong headwinds of up to 20 m / s (twice that of the DJI Inspire 2) thanks to a set of five stereo cameras and an infrared rangefinder. Experts from the Japan Aerospace Research Agency even helped in fine-tuning the drone. For installation, proprietary cameras from the A7S III, FX3, or Alpha 1 lines are supported.

The maximum autonomous flight time of the Airpeak S1 is 22 minutes when fully charged (without additional load). With the camera, the autonomy is 12 minutes. The angular velocity is 180 degrees per second. The attainable tilt angle is no more than 55 degrees. The drone is equipped with obstacle detection, flight information tracking, and an enhanced security remote control that uses cloud technology.

As the main features of the Airpeak S1, Sony states such characteristics as flight stability and excellent maneuverability. They are provided by a high-performance electric propulsion regulator (ESC) that combines sensor data and an internal propulsion device. It is noteworthy that specialists of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) even helped refine the drone.

The Sony Airpeak S1 is scheduled for release in the fourth quarter of 2021. The drone will be available for pre-order in September for $9,000, with the first deliveries expected in the fall. Customers will receive two pairs of propellers, one remote control, two batteries, and a charger. The Gremsy T3, designed specifically for the Airpeak S1, will be sold separately (its price is not specified yet). In addition to the controller, you can control the drone through the mobile app Airpeak Flight.
