This tutorial shows how to add VirtualBox repositories to your Ubuntu system so that you can install Oracle VirtualBox on Ubuntu 18.04 or 16.04, and to always get the latest versions when they are available. Follow the steps below to install VirtualBox Ubuntu 18.04 / 16.04.
The first step is to log into your system and update your system packages to the latest version by entering the command lines below.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
Then enter the commands below to add the VirtualBox repository key to allow Ubuntu to validate that the packages downloaded from the repository are trusted and signed with the key.
wget -q https://www.virtualbox.org/download/oracle_vbox_2016.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -
wget -q https://www.virtualbox.org/download/oracle_vbox.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -
Now that the key has been added, you can add the VirtualBox repository to your Ubuntu system.
sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian` lsb_release -cs` contrib "
Finally, enter the following command to update the Ubuntu repositories, including the VirtualBox repositories that we have added above, and to install the latest available version of Virtualbox 5.2 for Ubuntu 18.04 / 16.04.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install virtualbox-5.2
Once the command runs successfully, VirtualBox will be installed. You can start VirtualBox Ubuntu 18.04 or 16.04 with the following command.

Note that the download architecture of the VirtualBox package (64-bit or 32-bit) has to match the architecture of your Ubuntu Linux kernel. With that said, if you are using Ubuntu 18.04 or 16.04 64-bit, you will need to install the AMD64 package. It doesn’t matter if you have an AMD or Intel processor.
