“Luther: The Fallen Sun” (Luther: The Fallen Sun)
- Kinopoisk: 6.4.
- IMDb: 6.5.
- Genre: detective, thriller.
- Duration: 129 minutes.
Luther: Fallen Sun is a feature-length sequel to the hit BBC detective series starring Idris Elba. In the original, the story of Chief Inspector John Luther was a mixture of Sherlock Holmes and Columbo. The creator of the series, Neil Cross, himself admitted that his character is similar to Holmes in his personality and non-standard approach to solving crimes, and the format of the show, when the audience initially sees who the criminal is, but does not understand how he will be caught, is borrowed from his favorite detective series. After the events of the last season, the protagonist finds himself in prison. However, he is still haunted by one unsolved murder, new details of which Luther themselves find. A brilliant London detective must once again cross the line of the law in order to hunt down a brutal serial killer. Idris Elba, of course, again played Luther, but the role of the main villain went to Andy Serkis.

For family viewing with children, a Netflix cartoon about a boy who was looking for his long-lost sister may be suitable. The animated film is based on the novel of the same name by Kate DiCamillo. After all, he is struggling to find Adele, even when everyone around has long come to terms with the fact that the girl is missing. One day, a fortune teller tells the boy that an elephant should lead him to his goal. But how to find an elephant in the city, unless she falls from the sky. And that’s just the first impossible task for Peter as he has yet to take on the county’s best fighter, learn to fly, and perform several other incredible feats while searching for his sister.

In recent years, especially among online viewers, Korean fantasy and melodrama films have become very popular. This wave of love for Asian cinema was gradually picked up by Hollywood, exploiting the theme under the guise of “improving the situation with racial and ethnic diversity.” Sometimes you get good movies. For example, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings with Chinese-American actors about Chinese myths, or the best film of 2022, Everything Everywhere at Once with Malaysian Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh. Zhang Can Score is a Disney movie in the same category. It was created and starred by Asian Americans. The action takes place in one of the American schools, where teenagers, as usual, compete to become popular, to date the most beautiful girl, and so on. One day, the protagonist makes a bet that he will be able to make a “dunk” (a special kind of hammering in basketball) before the end of the school year.
Oscar winners who are not ashamed to reconsider
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” (Everything Everywhere All at Once)
- Kinopoisk: 7.3.
- IMDb: 7.9.
- Genre: Fantasy, Comedy, Action.
- Duration: 139 minutes.
The main character of the Oscars in 2023 was the film about traveling through the multiverse “Everything is everywhere and at once”. He received seven statuettes, including for the best film, director, screenplay and editing. Three other awards were won by the acting ensemble. And if everything was clear with Michelle Yeoh (even our articles over the past few months have repeatedly said that the actress is very likely to take the award for herself), then the victory of Ke Hugh Kwan and Jamie Lee Curtis for supporting roles only confirms how outstanding the work was done by the whole film crew during the production of “Everything, Everywhere, at Once”. In general, whoever has not yet watched the main masterpiece of 2022, you can safely start this business this weekend, and then be sure to write in the comments what emotions the scene with two very talkative stones aroused, watching the movement of the sun on the edge of the cliff. The main thing is not to pay attention to the first ten minutes.
“The Whale” (The Whale)
- Kinopoisk: 7.9.
- IMDb: 7.8.
- Genre: drama.
- Duration: 117 minutes.
A film by Darren Aronofsky that truly brought 90s-00s favorite Brendan Fraser back to the top of the cinematic Olympus. Due to health problems, in his personal life and other related factors, the actor first disappeared from the big screens, and then completely stopped acting in films, interrupting himself with small appearances in TV shows. Only in 2019, with the success of the DC show Doom Patrol, did everyone remember that there was once such an actor. Aronofsky, on the other hand, was looking for a leading man for The Whale for a long time. The director had very strict requirements that only Fraser could satisfy. The actor completely got used to the role. As a result – the award “Oscar” in the category “Best Actor”. The film “The Whale” was made for those who like to watch a serious and thoughtful movie, with messages, subtexts and morality, and not explosives and mixers. It tells the story of an obese professor, Charlie, who wants to do at least one right thing with his life.
“Pinocchio Guillermo del Toro” (Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio)
- Kinopoisk: 7.6.
- IMDb: 7.6.
- Genre: Animation, Musical, Fantasy, Drama.
- Duration: 117 minutes.
Carlo Collodi’s classic children’s tale about a wooden boy named Pinocchio has been filmed almost fifty times. And in 2022, three new adaptations appeared at once. Not a very successful Russian animated film, even more unsuccessful Disney film with Tom Hanks as Geppetto and Pinocchio Guillermo del Toro. The latter, unlike its competitors, became not just a good adaptation, but the best animated film of 2022, receiving both the Golden Globe and the Oscar in this category. This time, Pinocchio got into a puppet musical film, and even with elements of dark fantasy (as if one could expect something different from Guillermo del Toro). The story, in addition to the main scenario moves, is almost completely redesigned, so the film looks fresh even for those who have seen and read dozens of other cinema, theatrical and literary adaptations of this fairy tale.
